What is PED and RTPO

The Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU) regulates the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment marketed in the European Union. Manufacturers outside the EU exporting to Europe must fully comply with PED requirements, including NDT performed by personnel qualified per ISO 9712.

RTPO (Recognized Third-Party Organization) validates NDT personnel qualification under the PED. The PCN (ISO 9712) certification is accepted as an RTPO scheme, ensuring inspectors and procedures meet European requirements.

SimpleNDT holds PCN/ISO 9712 Level 3 certification in six methods, meaning procedures, qualifications and reports are accepted by European Notified Bodies for CE marking.

FAQ
What’s the difference between ASNT and PCN for PED purposes?+
PED requires ISO 9712 or equivalent qualification. PCN is an ISO 9712 certification scheme accepted as RTPO. ASNT (SNT-TC-1A) is employer-based and generally not accepted alone for PED. SimpleNDT holds both certifications.
We already have ASME. Do we need something different for PED?+
Yes. Personnel qualification requirements differ: ASME accepts SNT-TC-1A, but PED requires ISO 9712. Procedures must also reference European harmonized standards (EN) rather than ASME Section V. SimpleNDT can adapt your existing program to meet both.
